Castling

Click on your king to select it. Then click either two squares to the right or left, depending on which way you wish to castle. The rook will be moved automatically.
The rules of chess apply. All squares between the king and rook must be clear. Your king cannot castle out of check and cannot cross a square that is in check (the rook can be in check). The king and the rook involved must not have moved previously.

Getting Logged In

Recently the structure of the JoeChess web pages was changed. Due to this change, old email links may not work. New emails sent by the system will. A working link should look something like this:

http://www.joechess.com/joechess_startup.asp?GamePlayerID=xx&GamePlayerPIN=xx

Links to "www.kirok.com" or that refer to "chessgame.asp" are no longer valid.

Check the JoeChess home page for the latest information about program updates.
This happens when you have started JoeChess from an email link. The email link is not secure- anybody that had a copy of that link can see your games. To prevent your email address from falling into unscrupulous hands, JoeChess requires you to fully log in to view and edit account information.
Well, you have to answer that for yourself. My guess is that it's possible. Send an email to chessmaster@joechess.com and I will send your password and user name to the address JoeChess has on record. Don't forget your password twice though!

Creating New Games

Only players who are currently playing less than the number of games they specified under "Max Games" in their profile will be available to challenge.
Sure- just fill in their email address and hit the button. The more the merrier!

Managing My Profile

Information in your profile is used to make JoeChess work the way you want it to. You can specify the maximum number of games you want to play, change your login and email information, describe yourself so other players can know a little about you before challenging you.

JoeChess Fees

JoeChess is free! Just don't be jerk and you won't get kicked off.
You should let your conscience be your guide. When deciding, consider the following:
  • Joe created JoeChess on his own time for use by himself and his friends.
  • Joe hosts JoeChess on his own server at his own home using his private bandwidth.
  • Joe has an odd sense of humor and would be amused to know you read this far on this ridiculous question.
Nope.
Nope.

Miscellaneous

Mike Layfield designed both the old and the new piece graphics and has kindly let me use them for JoeChess. Mike has also designed a chess variant called Hexes which is a lot of fun. We are currently looking at getting Hexes working through JoeChess, but until then check out Hexes Games.
An excellent question, one that I've often asked myself. Based on actual JoeChess games, I've done a mortality study. For the results, click here: JoeChess Mortiality Study
